Superintendent Update - September 3, 2021

Posted by Victoria Jackson on 9/7/2021

Dear Beacon Community:

I wanted to provide you with a few quick updates before heading into the long weekend.  It was great seeing students and parents at different orientation events the past few days and I am incredibly excited about this upcoming school year.

New York School COVID-19 Guidelines

The New York Department of Health issued COVID-19 guidelines for schools yesterday afternoon.  While they are late in arrival, they are in alignment with CDC school guidelines which has been our planning tool all summer.  As a result, we see no major changes with our school opening planning.

The one big change is that unvaccinated staff will be required to be COVID-19 tested on a weekly basis.  The NYDOH is also strongly encouraging districts to test students on a regular basis if we have parent permission.  The Dutchess County Department of Health is already working on a plan to assist school districts with these testing requirements and we will work on rolling them out in the coming weeks.

I did a reopening town hall on zoom on Wednesday, September 1, you can check it out on youtube here:

Upcoming Capital Project

The BCSD Board of Education will be holding a special board meeting on Wednesday, September 8 at 7:00 to consider accepting a plan to bring a $26 million capital project to the district voters on October 26, 2021.  Last spring, we met with stakeholder groups from all six schools twice to develop plans for improving all of our schools and facilities.  At this meeting on the 8th, we will share plans for all six schools.  These plans were all developed from the input of these stakeholder groups and a careful review of the infrastructure of our buildings by our architect and engineer.  It is also important to note that the project is tax neutral.  If the board accepts this plan, we will do a variety of forums both online and in-person to educate the public about the project and answer questions that people have before the vote on October 26. I look forward to sharing more about the project on the 8th and at events before October 26.

Girls in Sports Day

Girls in Sports Day is Sunday, September 12th from 9:00-3:00 at Beacon High School. Girls in grades 3-8 are encouraged to attend. We are excited to have the student-athletes and coaches from Vassar College (volleyball), Pace University (Soccer, Softball, Lacrosse), Manhattanville College (basketball) and Mount Saint Mary College (swimming) working with the girls at this event. Girls will get the opportunity to try all of the team sports Beacon Athletics has to offer. Standout Army West Point basketball player, Kelsey Minato, will also be joining us as a guest speaker! To register, send in the form to Beacon Athletics. Day of registration is welcome but t-shirts are only guaranteed to pre-registered girls.   Information is also attached to this email.

Have a great weekend!
