• NYS State Learning Standards

The New York State Learning Standards are a set of academic guidelines established by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to define the knowledge and skills that students are expected to acquire at each grade level from kindergarten through high school. These standards provide a clear framework for what students should know and be able to do in various subject areas, ensuring that all students receive a high-quality education that prepares them for success in college, careers, and life.

Key Features of the New York State Learning Standards:

    1. Subject Areas:

The New York State Learning Standards cover a broad range of subjects, including:

    • English Language Arts (ELA): Standards related to reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language development.
    • Mathematics**: Standards focused on mathematical concepts, skills, and problem-solving abilities.
    • Science: Standards for understanding scientific principles, inquiry methods, and application of scientific knowledge.
    • Social Studies: Standards that cover history, geography, civics, economics, and government.
    • The Arts: Standards in visual arts, music, theater, and dance.
    • Physical Education: Standards for physical health, fitness, and wellness.
    • World Language: Standards for the acquisition and use of foreign languages.
    • Technology: Standards related to technological literacy, including the use of digital tools and media.

    2. Grade-Level Expectations:

The standards are organized by grade level or band (e.g., K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and high school), with specific expectations for each grade. These expectations outline the skills and knowledge students should develop as they progress through their education.

    3. College and Career Readiness:

The Learning Standards are designed to ensure that students are prepared for post-secondary education and careers. They focus on developing critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills that are essential for success in a rapidly changing global economy.

    4. Rigorous and Challenging Content:

The standards emphasize high academic expectations and encourage students to think critically, solve complex problems, and engage deeply with the content. The goal is to push students to achieve their fullest potential, providing them with the tools needed for lifelong learning and success.

    5. Focus on Literacy and Mathematical Proficiency:

The New York State Learning Standards strongly emphasize literacy (reading and writing) and mathematical proficiency, recognizing that these foundational skills are crucial for success across all subjects and in everyday life.

    6. Development of 21st Century Skills:

In addition to content knowledge, the standards promote the development of skills essential for success in the 21st century, such as:

    • Critical Thinking: The ability to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information from multiple sources.
    • Collaboration: Working effectively in teams to solve problems and complete tasks.
    • Communication: Effectively conveying ideas through writing, speaking and digital media.
    • Creativity: Using imagination and innovation to solve problems and create new ideas.

    7. Diverse Learning Needs:

The standards are designed to be flexible and inclusive, accommodating diverse learning needs and ensuring that all students, including those with disabilities and English Language Learners (ELLs), can achieve success. The Learning Standards encourage differentiated instruction to meet the individual needs of all students.

    8. Assessment and Accountability:

The Learning Standards serve as the foundation for the state’s assessment system, including the 3-8 assessments and Regents exams. These assessments measure students’ progress and proficiency in relation to these standards. Results help educators identify areas of strength and areas that may require additional focus.

    9. Continual Updates and Revisions:

The New York State Learning Standards are periodically reviewed and updated to reflect evolving educational research, societal changes, and students' needs. For example, the adoption of the Common Core State Standards in 2010 resulted in updates to the English Language Arts and Mathematics standards, which were later revised in New York to reflect state-specific needs and priorities.
