Budget Update
The past few weeks, I have had the pleasure of attending some of the spring concerts, and it gave me a chance to reflect on the music program. Eight years ago, we had four students in a jazz band that encompassed both Rombout Middle School and Beacon High School. Now, we have a BHS jazz band and a Rombout jazz band, a Rombout wind ensemble, and multiple, smaller jazz ensembles as well. Eight years ago, the orchestra pit for the Beacon Players' performances was comprised of all adult musicians. In this year’s performance of Guys and Dolls, twenty-six of our students were in the orchestra pit playing for the show.
I share this as an example of how we have tried to use our budget to expand opportunities for our students. Whether it is our expanding into full-day pre-k, increasing courses at the secondary level, strengthening curriculum at the elementary level, or our growing extracurriculars for elementary and middle school students, we have accomplished expanded opportunities for our students, all with budgets at the New York tax cap. This year’s budget is at the tax cap as well.
In this year’s budget, we are trying to expand mental health supports with a site-based mental health clinic at RMS and more academic support teachers at the elementary level.
The vote is on Tuesday, May 20, from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm at Glenham Elementary and Beacon High School. All of our budget information is on our website here: https://www.beaconk12.org/

Budget Update
I have some quick updates for everyone.

State Cell Phone Restriction Update
Earlier this week, the state passed an internet-enabled device “bell-to-bell” restriction law covering all New York public schools. Next school year, students will have to put their devices away in storage for the entirety of the school day, with very limited exemptions from the law. I think this will help keep our educational environment free from digital distractions, but I also know this change will be a challenge for us as well. I will share much more in the weeks to come. We will have our plan in place, including information about what kind of storage devices we will use and policies and procedures, later in the summer, but I wanted to give everyone a heads up.
Our students and staff have done an amazing job with the classroom phone restriction this year, and I think we will implement this next step in a very positive way. There will be much more to come on this.
