• Candidate Information

The Annual School Budget Vote and Election will take place on Tuesday, May 18, 2021.  There are four seats with terms expiring on the Board of Education.  Citizens interested in running for a seat on the board will find the School Board Candidate packet available for download below:

    School Board Candidate Packet

The packet may also be obtained by calling Kelly Pologe, Clerk of the Board,  (845) 838-6900 ext. 2032 or via email at pologe.k@beaconk12.org. The packet can then be picked up in person or it can be mailed to the candidate.

Candidates for the Board of Education shall be nominated by a petition directed to the District Clerk.  For the Budget Vote and Election to be held on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, the State Legislature approved S.4430 (Ryan)/A.5456 (Jean-Pierre) and has now (3/8/21) been signed into law by Governor Cuomo.  The bill (now Chapter 70) lowers the petition requirement for small city school districts to 50 qualified voters.  This reduction in the signature requirement is effective for the 2021 election only.

A qualified voter is a person who is a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years of age, and a resident of the school district for at least 30 days prior to the date of the Budget Vote. A qualified voter is not required to be a registered voter.

Petitions must state the residence of each signer, and the name and residence of each candidate.

Board of Education Press Release March 29, 2021

    For Immediate Release

    March 29, 2021

A recent change to New York State law will make it easier for people to run for the Beacon City School District (BCSD) Board of Education in 2021.

Only 50 signatures are required on this year’s nominating petitions, down from the usual 100 signatures. Each candidate must collect 50 signatures on their petition and turn it in to the district clerk, Kelly Pologe, by 5 pm on Wednesday, April 28.

Anyone who is interested in running for the School Board can download the petitions from the district website (www.beaconk12.org/Page/1573) or pick up a board candidate packet at 10 Education Drive in Beacon during regular business hours.

The goal is to allow candidates "to collect voters' signatures while respecting public health guidelines," according to the law, which covers only the 2021 elections.

The petition signatures must be from qualified voters — meaning people who are U.S. citizens, at least 18 years of age, and residents of the school district for at least 30 days prior to the date of the budget vote. A qualified voter is not required to be a registered voter.

The Beacon Board of Education has nine members. Normally they have three-year terms, with three of those terms expiring each year. However, there are four board seats up for election this year, due to a board member resigning before his term ended in 2022. A board member was temporarily appointed to fill that seat until this year’s election.

The incumbents whose three-year terms end June 30 are Elissa Betterbid and Flora Stadler. The incumbents whose appointed terms end May 18 are John Galloway Jr. and Jasmine Johnson. The BCSD Board election and school budget vote are set by law for May 18.

“I think the past year has taught us how important schools are to the health of our communities,” said BCSD Board of Education President Meredith Heuer. “Serving on the school board is a way to contribute to the integrity of this vital system.”

For more information and guidelines, please visit the district website: www.beaconk12.org/Page/1573, or contact Ms. Pologe at 845-838-6900, ext. 2032 or at pologe.k@beaconk12.org.

The deadline for submitting petitions is Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at 5:00 P.M.
